Are you planning a trip to Milos? Keep on reading, as I’ll share 7 things to know before visiting the island of Milos.

1. Rent your own vehicle
Renting your own vehicle will give you the chance and freedom to discover the main highlights on Milos island at your own pace. There is public transportation available on the island, but the buses only run frequently to a few hotspots on the island such as Sarakiniko, Plaka and Pollonia (make sure to always check the time table).
If you want to discover more secluded spots such as Mandrakia, Klima village or Firopotamos beach, you need your own vehicle.

2. Book a sailing trip (in advance)
One of the main reasons people visit Milos is for the former pirate hide out: Kleftiko. These stunning rock formations, combined with the bluest waters you’ve ever seen, will be the highlight of your trip. Doing a sailing (half) day trip will allow you to explore Kleftiko (only accessible by water) and many other spots!
I did a sailing day trip with Polco Sailing and would totally recommend them!
Note that these trips tend to sell out quickly in the high season. Booking (a week) in advance is recommended.

3. Choose the location of your accommodation wisely
When it comes to choosing your place to stay, there are a few options. Depending on the type of vacation you’re looking for, one might be more suitable than the other.
1. Most convenient area
- Adamas is the town where you’ll arrive if you travel by ferry. The main bus station is located here as well and the majority of the boat trips depart from Adamas port. The town also offers great vibes and has many restaurants & cafes. I visited Milos twice and stayed both times in the town of Adamas. It’s definitely the most convenient ‘base camp’ to explore the island.
2. Charming villages
- Plaka is the capital of Milos and due to its location (on a hill) it offers unreal sunsets, picturesque spots and many cafes & restaurants. During the day the town is more quiet as the crowds typically arrive around sunset.
- Pollonia is a serene fishing village located on the north east tip of the island. If you want to be close to the beach with a more authentic touch, this place will be perfect for you.
3. Unique stays
Looking for a more unusual place with a spectacular view? Milos got you covered! There are a few small fishing villages that offer accommodations. Note that these spots are limited so booking in advance is necessary.
- Klima is a colourful fishing village located just outside Plaka. This place becomes especially beautiful during sunset when the surroundings and vibes give you goosebumps right away.
- Firopotamos is postcard perfect! If I were to go back to Milos, I’d book an accommodation on the bay at this small picturesque village.
- Fourkovouni is the most secluded from the three due to its tricky accessibly but absolutely worth the effort.

4. Book enough days
The list of things to do and see on the island is endless. I really encourage you to book enough days to experience the island at its fullest. When I did research for Milos, I’ve read a couple of times that 3-4 days was the recommended length of stay. This is definitely not enough in my opinion.
I suggest booking one week on the island. You’ll still feel like it’s not enough, but a full week will allow you to explore different villages and beaches at a comfortable pace.

5. Wake up before sunrise
Another main highlight in Milos is Sarakiniko. This spot is amazing to relax, cliff jump and watch the sunset, but it becomes even more magical during sunrise. Definitely an early wake up call you won’t regret!
If you want to catch the sunrise at Sarakiniko, you need your own vehicle to get there or hire a taxi as the buses don’t run that early.
Other sunrise/sunset spots:
- Plaka Castle
- Klima Village

6. Make a list of the things you absolutely want to see
Because Milos offers so much incredible beaches, fun activities and unique places to visit, it’s likely you won’t be able to do/see everything.
Do some research and make a list of the things you absolutely want to see, start at the top and make your way down.
Not sure where to start? Head over to this blogpost where I share the top 10 things to do in Milos.

7. Check the ferry times
During high season (June until September), ferries run frequently and multiple times a day to various other islands. As from mid-October, there are less options to choose from so checking the times in advance is necessary as the number of ferries that sail daily is decreasing.
We talked to some locals and they told us the island of Milos never really shuts down in Winter as ferries from Athens still run on a weekly basis. However, nearly all restaurants are closed. Some hotels stay operational the entire year.
