If you think of Santorini, I’m pretty sure you picture a honeymoon destination, blue domes and unreal sunsets. And guess what, you’re not wrong. Most of these spots are located in the popular town of Oia. But note that there is much more to do in Santorini. Here are my 8 top things to do in Santorini.

1. Wander around the streets of Oia
Oia is the most popular area in Santorini and there is good reason why. This town is absolutely stunning and will get you those postcard worthy views. The small houses are so picturesque and the Caldera views are just unreal. It’s like dreaming with your eyes open.
If you want to stroll around without a huge crowd, I suggest coming in the morning. During the day, you’ll have quite a large crowd and at night it’s very busy as people from all around the island come and watch the sunset at Oia Castle.

2. Watch the sunset at Oia Castle
When in Greece, you want to watch as much sunsets as possible – it’s an activity on its own. The most popular spot to watch a beautiful sunset in Oia (and Santorini in general) is at Oia Castle. You have a stunning view of the ocean and the town. The view is just unbeatable.
I want to warn you though: you won’t be alone. This spot can get very (I repeat: very) crowded.

3. Hike from Fira to Oia
Enjoy the amazing Caldera views during a 10km walk from Fira to Oia (or vice versa). There is a hiking trail which is safe and well-maintained. However, pick a good timing – preferable in the morning or late afternoon – to walk this trail as there is no shade and the Greek sun can be very aggressive. Definitely bring sunscreen if you plan the hike during the middle of the day.
Are you in for a hike but 10 kilometres sounds a bit too much? Then the next activity might be just for you.

4. Walk The Golden Road from Fira to Imerovigli
The ‘Golden Road’ is a walking trail near the coastline between Fira and Imerovigli. The road offers a lovely 20 to 30 minutes walk with stunning Caldera views.

5. Visit Ammoudi Bay
Ammoudi Bay is located in the town of Oia. When in Oia, it’s a bit of a walk down (200+ steps) but it’s totally worth it as this little port is so picturesque.
There are a few restaurants down there and if you keep walking past them (to your left when facing the sea) you’ll find a great swimming and snorkelling spot in 100-200m (beware: the last part of the ‘path’ is very rocky). There are no beach chairs or restaurants, but there is a cliff jumping point. I’m personally not brave enough to cliff jump, but watching people do is really entertaining.

6. Visit the beautiful town Imerovigli
Imerovigli is located between Oia and Fira. Here you’ll find whitewashed buildings, blue domes and cute streets. It’s very picturesque like Oia, but less crowded and more peaceful. Definitely a great town if you’re looking for an accommodation as the views here are absolutely beautiful.

7. Have a relaxing day at Perissa Beach
If you’re looking for a relaxing day at the beach, Perissa Beach is a great place to head to. You can rent beach chairs for a very affordable price and food & drinks are reasonably priced as well (and very tasty). Spending some time in Oia is amazing but can also be a bit overwhelming, a relaxing day at the beach of Perissa is a great activity to add to your itinerary and escape the crowds for a bit.
Note that there are no white sandy beaches in Santorini. The beaches are made of black volcanic stones that aren’t very comfortable on your feet.
TIP: bring water shoes!
You can easily reach Perissa Beach by bus:
- One-way bus tickets from Oia are €3,60 pp.
- The journey from Oia takes about 90min, with a transfer in Fira.
Other things worth mentioning:
- Do a sailing tour around the island
- Check out Red Beach and Black Beach
- Visit the Archaeological Sites
